2010-01-17 Gravesend Town White 0 vs 2 Under 10s Gold
Despite having to play the whole game with only 6 players the Golds managed to produce probably their best performance of the season in defeating Gravesham Town White 2 - 0. If anything in what was a tough tackling game the margin of victory flattered our oponents.
What was vital was that we didn't concede an early goal, and despite Gravesham starting well and hitting the post it didn't take long for the Golds to get to grips with their new formation and take control of the game. The two goals that won the match were both scored midway through the first half. The first came about as a result of an excellent run from Zachary. He picked the ball up deep inside his own half, skipped past 3 or 4 tackles before his low hard cross was turned in to the net by one of thier own defender's who was put under pressure from Shania who had done well to get in to a postion to challenge for the cross. Shortly after the team won a corner from which Shania scored. She did well to be the first to react to a loose ball and score with a low shot in to the corner. From then on it was all about if from the Golds excellent play they would increase their lead, unfortunately through decent saves and bad luck it wasn't to be. The closest we came was when a shot from distance by Deniz hit the post.
Every player deserves 'a big pat on the back!' for their effort, work rate and team spirit, it's a real credit to each and every one of them. From what I saw our all round display with only 6 players surprised our opponents and they didn't seem to happy about it either! - was it 6 or 7 times our trainer had to go on!!
Today everyone deseves a special mention, Zak was extremely brave and despite not being under too much pressure made some good saves and commanded his area well. Jack's postioning sense is improving all the time as he always seems to be first to any through ball - and made some important clearances, Amy and Shania are getting better with every game they play, the number of tackles they made - and won - in breaking up Graveshams play was amazing, Deniz was everywhere and is becoming more confident in his play and was today unlucky not to score, and Zachary who took some knocks but still hastled and chased the opposition and always remained a goal threat - Well done everyone!
As the players came off at the end of the match you could see that they had given everything but with the big smiles it was easy to see that they were rightly proud of how they played. It was a close call but Deniz was voted managers player of the match and Jack was the parents choice.
